Assistant Professor at EAPS

Postdoc, University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and Colorado State University

Ph.D. (Chemistry) 2021, University of Wisconsin – Madison

B.S. (Chemistry) 2015, The College of New Jersey

I am an atmospheric chemist who combines field measurements and local-to-global modeling to study surface-atmosphere interactions, the fate of atmospheric chemicals, and the impacts of human and natural processes on air quality and climate. I am a New Jersey native (and Springsteen fan) but have lived in the Midwest since 2015. I conducted graduate research in atmospheric chemistry with the Bertram Group at the University of Wisconsin, contributing to the development of innovative mass spectrometry methods used for observing both well-known and newly discovered atmospheric species over forests, lakes, the Pacific coast, and near urban centers. For my postdoctoral work in the Atmospheric Chemistry group at UMN and the Farmer group at CSU, I worked to deepen our understanding of the processes controlling the emissions and deposition of volatile organic compounds and ozone in forested and urban atmospheres. In my free time I enjoy powerlifting, reading, and taking my mean terrier Simon for walks.

Carter Swenson

Carter Swenson

Ph.D. Student in EAPS

B.S. (Meteorology) 2023, St. Cloud State University

Carter received his B.S. in Meteorology from St. Cloud State University in 2023. After graduation he took an internship at the Hennepin County Emergency Management Center, where he solidified a passion for research, instrumentation, data visualization, and accessibility in science. In his free time, he enjoys volunteering, storm chasing, antiquing, painting, knitting, traveling, and exploring art museums. Carter believes it is crucial to provide spaces that cultivate inclusivity and environments for all students, faculty, and the public; giving everyone a chance to discover science and a voice in the scientific community.

Evelyn Girardi

Evelyn Girardi

Atmospheric Science and Chemistry Double Major

Evelyn is a junior pursuing a B.S. in Atmospheric Science with a second major in Chemistry. She has participated in a number of research projects within atmospheric science, and from them she has discovered that her areas of greatest interest are severe weather, climate change, and atmospheric chemistry. She especially enjoys the process of data analysis and visualization, though finds intrigue in field work and instrumentation as well. Outside of research she enjoys scuba diving, drawing, traveling, cats, and sweet treats.
