Why RISE?

Purdue’s existing excellence in space science, remote sensing, and engineering uniquely positions us to become the premier institution for space exploration research and development. By working together we can address a much wider array of knowledge gaps, access more diverse funding sources, and build stronger relationships with industry partners and policy makers. 

In space, science enables exploration, and exploration enables science.

Why now?

Collaboration is critical now given the new opportunities presented NASA’s plans for a rapid increase in the development and cadence of both robotic and human missions to the Moon and beyond, as well as new investments in Earth remote sensing.

• Purdue is uniquely positioned to plan, build, and operate robotic missions (satellites, landers, mobile platforms) but developing this pipeline will require coordination across campus
• Commercial and human lunar exploration need scientific goals and context partnered with technological innovation

RISE Objectives

• Advance knowledge of the Earth, Solar System, and beyond
• Integrate Purdue’s wide ranging space-related capabilities into end-to-end expertise in the life cycle of robotic Earth and space missions 
• Build bridges between science and engineering to enable human exploration of space
• Provide a centralized resource for external partners seeking science-based solutions for space exploration
• Help ensure Purdue is the school of choice for space industry employers
